This is the granddaddy of weight loss surgery!
This option has a long history of success to fall back on, and has evolved into what is known as the RNY (Roux-en-Y).

  • A smaller stomach pouch is created near the top of the stomach.
  • A cut is made in the small intestine creating two sections (an upper an a lower section)
  • The lower section of the small intestine is pulled up and attached to the new smaller stomach pouch.
  • The other cut end of the small intestine (the upper portion) is pulled down and re-attached to the small intestine, closer to where it attaches the large intestine (or colon).
    • This allows bile and pancreatic fluids from the pancreas and liver to aide in food digestion, consumed food bypasses a large portion of the intestine (the cut and relocated upper portion mentioned just above), limiting the amount of absorbed calories and nutrients

All surgeries come with risks, please discuss with your doctor.  Weight loss surgery success is dependent upon lifestyle modification and dietary compliance.  While protein is an essential part of the post surgery diet, we recommend that special attention is also paid to mineral and nutrient consumption to ensure a healthy, well functioning body.

The Gastric Sleeve procedure involves removing approximately 70-80% of the original stomach, leaving a sleeve or banana shaped stomach.  Your stomach is much smaller, so you will feel full much sooner.   As this procedure does not divert calories or nutrients from your intestines, mal-absorption is not as big a concern as other surgeries.

There is a possibility that the Ghrelin (hunger hormone) gland may be removed during surgery.  With this surgery you will either need to set a timer to reminder yourself to eat, or you will will need to watch food consumption to ensure your stomach doesn’t stretch to a larger size.

If a higher percentage of weight loss is the goal, this may be the surgery your doctor discusses with you.

  • A large portion of the stomach is completely removed to create a smaller stomach pouch that resembles a banana
  • The small intestine is cut creating two sections (an upper and a lower section)
  • The lower section is pulled up and attached up to the new smaller stomach
  • The upper section of the cut intestine is re-connected further down the path, closer to where it meets the large intestine (or colon)
    • This allows bile and pancreatic fluids from the pancreas and liver to aide in food digestion.
    • Unlike the Gastric Bypass, the larger portion of the stomach is removed completely.  As this procedure ensures that food consumed bypasses a large portion of the small intestine, mal-absorption is something the client should be keenly aware of.

Although this surgery is now less common in Canada, it is still offered in some countries.

  • A band is inserted into the abdomen and placed around a smaller upper portion stomach creating a smaller initial stomach pouch
  • The band creates a narrow opening from the smaller pouch to the rest of the stomach
    • This slows how quickly the food is digested in the stomach and ensuring the ‘full’ feeling lasts longer)..
    •  As the stomach has a smaller initial pouch, you will feel full sooner than you do currently when consuming a meal.
  • A tube runs from the band to an injection port, placed just below the skin, on your abdomen.
  • Approximately 1 – 1.5 months after surgery, saline is inserted into the injection port, further tightening the opening from the smaller to larger stomach
  • This adjustment can be performed multiple times while the lap band is in place.
